I attempted to use the basic premise, Emma Green, a 13-year-old girl campaigning for a school election to become popular for each genre. Here's the behind the scenes work:
Character sketch
Name and Age: Emma Green, 13
Goal: Emma wants to win 7th grade student council rep
Motivation: she is tired of being invisible at school, and wants to be noticed and recognized for what she’s accomplished.
Conflict: her best friend wants the same thing and campaigns against her!
Realistic set up done.
Historical fic- set with the backdrop of the moon landing in 1969 (before I was born – yikes! Research time)
Mystery – a key prop for her campaign speech goes missing?
Fantasy – set in a school for witches with no tech, just magic
Dystopian – techno world of AI, school programs, learn at home, 30 min instruction with 30 min work, 6 hours straight, eat during class.
Superheroes – teen titan like, campaigning for Team Leader
Sci-Fi – school on a spaceship, space station, too similar to dystopian so maybe change that one.
Horror/suspense: similar to reality, except life or death stakes
Adventure: more of a treasure hunt, obstacle course, and scavenger hunt to win class rep.
GN – make one a gn.
Hero’s Journey
Ordinary World: starts with Emma and best friend scene of being invisible, hit in food fight?
Call to Adventure: trudging around campus to find an uncrowded bathroom, spy the poster for the campaign, all cartoon student gov students looking perfectly powerful
Crosses the threshold – signs up for it
Trials, allies, mentors, and enemies: 1 her bestie runs too and neither will back down, 2 she has no other allies, starts seeking them; 3 leadership teacher/mentor, 4. Enemies: other competition, bf more a nemesis; campaign speech challenges.
Final battle/conflict/climax: The Vote
Falling action and Resolution: doesn’t win, but realizes ran for the wrong reasons, but earned desired affect as she gained friends, allies, and recognition.
